Formatting a Data Tag

The format of Data Tags can be manipulated. That manipulation gets applied to the data during merge time. String, DateTime and Numeric Data Tags can be formatted using the products’ Format Tag function.

To allow a Data Tag’s format to be changed click inside the Data Tag’s placeholder then click on the “Format Tag” button.

Note: Once a Data Tag or Table is selected the buttons under the Formatting section will become available.

There are three different Data Tag format types that can be formatted in the product; String, Numeric and DateTime. No matter where the Data Tag resides.

To format a Data Tag, click in the Data Tags placeholder and then click on the “Format Tag” button.

String Formatting

The Product has the ability to format a string Data Tag.

 Click on the drop down list to view the format options.

Select an option to preview.

Click “Ok” to apply the format.

Numeric Formatting

The Product can format a numeric Data Tag to an array of different formats including a Custom format.

The Precision textbox allows the user to set the number of decimal places the merged data will be rounded off to.

Select a format to preview.

Click “Ok” to apply the format.

The Product also has a Custom format, which can be selected from the drop down list.



In the Custom Format textbox type in the way the format is required to show with zeros. The separators can be any character i.e. period, comma, slash, dash, etc. The precision must also be shown in Custom numeric.

Note: Using the Currency format, will apply the currency symbol of the regional setting that is set in Word, e.g. If the regional setting is set to “English US” it will apply the “$” currency symbol in front of the value. If the required “region” does not exist in Word, use Custom Format to add the required currency symbol.

Datetime Formatting

The Product has the ability to format DateTime Data Tags into an array of different formats including a Custom format.

Click on the drop down list to view the format options.

Select a format to preview.

Click “Ok” to apply the format.

The Product also has a Custom format that can be selected from the drop down list.



 In the Custom Format textbox type in the way the format is required to show by using the above letters do display the different elements of the date and time. The separators can be any character i.e. period, comma, slash, dash, etc.

Image Formatting

The Product allows the user to specify the size of an Image Tag in a Web Service, SQL and User Defined Data Sources. This can be done when first creating the Data Source or when it gets edited.

Note: The set image size gets applied when the image gets added to the template, not during merge time. Keep that in mind when editing the image, if it gets edited it will need to be re-added to the template.

When a field in a SharePoint List gets merged the image gets sized automatically.

Once the Data Source has been generated, double click on the Image Tag in the generated pane.

Now size the image.

Click “Ok” to confirm the change.

Click “Ok” in the Data Source window to add the Data Source.
